An Italian Picnic (in Surrey)

Today, me and my little family were meant to fly to Italy for wedding season. It was going to be the season of dreams, from Tuscany to Rome, Ravello, Sorrento and back. The loveliest couples, the dreamiest settings, amazing food, music and incredible design. Alas, we all know that’s not happening for a while. IT WILL, just not yet.

So instead, we decided to gather in the only way we know how, by pretending we’re in Italy. The sun was shining, the rolling Surrey Hills set the scene and Mo from The Foodsmith delivered an incredible Italian Picnic to us. We popped a bottle of prosecco across the most extra table setting, toasted our family, ours couples, then sat back and enjoyed. The food was so good, Ziggy actually sat still for 15 minutes!

I had the idea a couple of weeks back when walking in the fields behind my house, watching the hawthorn blow in the wind and imagining the trailing branches making the most amazing ceremony feature. I wanted to enjoy and celebrate the beauty of our lockdown and the position we find ourselves in. The view from our picnic is of our village.

As you can see, the food was mouth watering and the setting was beautiful. We really did feel like we were somewhere else for a little while.

Setting the memory of this day to one of pure joy on what could have been quite a sad day was the best thing we could have done. This is NOT the same as having your wedding postponed - far, far from it. But the creation of new, special memories really did help and I hope you find your special way to celebrate your ‘should-have-beens’.

Love from, Lucy x
