Styling your table at home

It’s the time of year for celebration, food, drink, friends and family. What could be more Italian than that? Things are going to be a bit different this year but that doesn’t stop you going all out on creating a pretty table. Maybe for New Years, Christmas day or simply a special date night to say goodbye to this challenging year.

With a bit more time on your hands it might be the perfect opportunity to create a special table and we’re going to show you how in just 5 simple steps…

  1. Think about what the event is. Where does it take place? How do you want it to feel? That might determine the colours you use…

For this table for example we wanted to create something clean, modern and really romantic.

  2. Work out what you have at home already. Some nice place mats? Maybe the odd candlestick? Start with those as a base of colours. You could even make a quick document with the key colours on to see if they work. This would take just 5 mins!

I had the plates, the chiffon, the candlesticks and the ribbons.

  3. Stack up your elements. The elements that make up a good table are: simplicity, layers, textures, a detail and contrast.

    Simplicity: the colours

    Layers: Chiffon, lace, plates

Textures: Chiffon, lace, plates, ribbon, stationery

Detail: The stationery and the food

Contrast: The black and white, warmed with the gold

  4. Go shopping!

I bought the lace place mats (Zara home) to break up the white of the table and the plates. We used the black candles to contrast - white candles would have just got lost in this table… And we briefed White Vines on some elegant stationery.

  5. The most important bit - source some wonderful treats!

We have the pleasure of knowing The Foodsmith who create amazing food boxes and platters for small and large gatherings. For this romantic table we simply went desserts and prosecco - it couldn’t really get much better could it?
